Crayon FAQ

Crayon is a coloring app for iPhone and iPad made by Hieu Tran Song. It is free to download, has no subscription and needs no account; optional one-time purchases unlock more pages and tools. The twelve answers below cover price, ads, iPad, the simple mode and how the art is made.

What is Crayon, and who makes it?

Crayon (listed on the App Store as Crayon coloring pages) is a coloring app for iPhone and iPad with 5,149 pages and crayon and colored-pencil brushes. It is made by Hieu Tran Song, an independent developer who publishes as Leafy Play.

Is Crayon free, or is it a subscription?

Crayon is free to download and has no subscription. Nothing renews. A selection of pages is free, and the page of the day is always free.

Optional one-time purchases unlock more: themed packs ($1.99 to $2.99), Pro tools ($1.99), No ads ($2.99) or Crayon Premium ($9.99) for every page, palette and brush. These are US App Store prices; other countries see local prices. What each purchase unlocks.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up and no login. Your artworks are saved on your device, and purchases are restored with your Apple ID in Settings, Shop, Restore Purchases.

Does it feel like coloring with real crayons?

Crayon has crayon and colored-pencil brushes with a paper texture, so strokes look grainy, like wax and pencil on paper, rather than flat. There is also a marker and a flat-color brush, seven palette sets, an eyedropper and your own custom colors. Some premium palettes and brushes are part of the optional Pro tools. How the tools work.

Does Crayon have tap to fill and stay inside the lines?

Yes, both. Tap to fill colors a whole area with one tap, and a near-miss on a tiny space still lands where you meant. With Stay inside the lines turned on, a brush stroke stays in the area where you started it. You can zoom up to 16x for small details and undo as far back as you like.

How many pages are there, and what themes?

5,149 pages: animals, mandalas, flowers, zen patterns, vehicles, seasons, fantasy and more, at four levels from easy to expert, plus a new page of the day. Seasonal sets come and go: there are 10 free Christmas pages this season, with 20 more for Crayon Premium or the Seasonal sets pack, and the Halloween set runs until 2 November.

Does Crayon work on iPad?

Yes. On iPad, Crayon uses a two-pane layout with the palette at the side, so the page gets the room. It needs iPadOS 15 or later.

Are there ads, and how do I remove them?

In grown-up mode, Crayon can show ads (banners and full-screen ads). The one-time No ads purchase ($2.99 in the US) or Crayon Premium removes them. The simple mode never shows ads.

Is there a simple mode for younger family members?

Yes. The simple mode has bigger buttons, a simple crayon box and only the easy tools. Brushes always stay inside the lines, there are no ads, and purchases, sharing and links ask a grown-up first. You switch modes in Settings.

Is the art in Crayon made with AI?

Mostly, yes. 4,806 of the 5,149 pages come from the studio's own AI-assisted image pipeline, and the other 343 are generated by code. Every page goes through automatic checks (areas that fill cleanly, no stray specks) and is curated before it goes into the app.

Is it the same as Skella's app or Crayon AI?

No. Crayon is made by Hieu Tran Song. It is not affiliated with ‘Crayon: Colouring Pages’ by Skella & Co, Crayon AI or Crayon Club. On the App Store, look for Crayon coloring pages by Hieu Tran Song (app id 6755095736).

Which devices does Crayon run on?

iPhone and iPad with iOS or iPadOS 15 or later. The app is in English. Get it on the App Store.
